The Department of Public Works is charged by the ordinances of the City of New Britain with the following responsibilities:
- construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of the City's infrastructure (roads, sidewalks, curbing, sanitary sewers, storm sewers, underground conduits)
- engineering, surveys and maps
- traffic signals, striping and signage
- snow removal
- fleet management for over 350 City vehicles
- refuse collection
The Department has a staff of 80 technical, professional and operational employees.
Statistics:
The infrastructure of New Britain is comprised of 325 lane miles of streets, 227 miles of sidewalks, 180 miles of sanitary sewers, 145 miles of storm sewers and 135 miles of underground electric and telecommunications conduits.
