21st Century Community Learning Centers and "Exercise the Right Choice" Programs

21st Century Community Learning Centers and "Exercise the Right Choice" After School Programs accepting applications at elementary and middle schools

The New Britain Parks and Recreation Department in collaboration with the Consolidated School District of New Britain is accepting registrations for the 21st Century Learning Centers Program and the "Exercise the Right Choice" After School Program. Chamberlain, DiLoreto Magnet, Jefferson, Lincoln, Gaffney, Smalley Academy, and Smith Elementary Schools will be the sites where the after school program for third through fifth graders will be held. Pulaski, Roosevelt, and Slade Middle Schools will be the sites where the after school program for sixth through eighth graders will be held. The After School Program, begins October 9, 2007 to May 9, 2008, Monday through Friday 2:45 p.m.-5:45 p.m.

The program is run by the New Britain Parks and Recreation Department and the Consolidated School District of New Britain, in association with several other City agencies. The 21st Century Community Centers Program (CCLC) is a State Department of Education program that provides grants to inner city and rural school districts, working in close cooperation with community organizations and other youth development agencies, to offer expanded learning opportunities outside of regular school hours for children in a safe educational environment. After school programs offer safe and constructive opportunities to grow and learn outside of the school day and are a growing and popular trend throughout the country. The 21st Century Community Learning Centers program demonstrates how schools can provide expanded support for children and their families.

There are three components to the after school program: education, recreation, and cultural arts. A homework session is held daily, with help from the college and high school staff. There is also eight hours academic instruction conducted by a certified teacher. A snack and juice is also provided daily. Call the Recreation Hotline at 826-3360 for a brochure, application forms or more program information
