2007 Louis A. Gentile Basketball Championship

New Britain Parks and Recreation Department New Release
March 21, 2007

Mayor Timothy T. Stewart and Committee Chairman Richard Lorch announced today the champions of 3rd Annual Louis A. Gentile Championship Tournament. The youth basketball league consists of ten Elementary School teams and six Middle School teams. The regular season ran from December 10th until March 3rd, with semi-finals being held on March 6th and 7th and the final game at Roosevelt Middle School on March 10th. The New Britain Parks and Recreation Department thanks all the players, parents, and coaches for their participation this year. Special acknowledgement and thanks goes out to Blaze Barbershop and Roma's Restaurant for their generous financial sponsorship of the league.

In the Elementary School finals, the Blaze Barbershop TarHeels coached by Jerrell Hargraves lost to Roma's Magic coached by Pedro Acevedo 17-14. The leading scorer for the TarHeels was Micheal Robinson with 8 points while Dontae Glover, Myra Mitchell and Juwan Leonard chipped in with 2 points each. The star for Roma's Magic was Curtrell Hyman with 5 points while Chika Chikwu played a great game with 4 points.

In the Middle School finals, Roma's Celtics coached by Matt Dowling defeated Roma's Hurricanes coached by Anthony Littlejohn 53-49. Christian Hardy tried his best to win the Championship game by scoring a game high 25 points for the Hurricanes, but unfortunately it was not enough as the combination of Jacob Jacquo (15 points) and Giovanni Lopez (18 points) proved to be too much for the Hurricanes.
