Lifeguards and Swim Instructors Wanted!

Mayor Timothy Stewart, and Chairman Richard Lorch announced today that the New Britain Parks and Recreation Department is actively seeking lifeguards and swim instructors for the summer of 2009. All lifeguards need to have CPR, First Aid, AED and lifeguard training certifications, and all swim instructors need to have their water safety instruction certification by the June 23rd in order to be qualified for the position. In addition, the Parks and Recreation Department will be offering two lifeguarding classes this spring at the New Britain Y.M.C.A on 50 High Street. Participants must be 15 years of age by the final class.

The first session is planned for Sundays 9a.m. to 1p.m. (pool), as well as Mondays and Wednesdays from 5p.m. to 8p.m (classroom). This session begins April 20th, ends May 10th, 2009. The second session is planned for Sundays 5p.m. to 9p.m. (pool), and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5p.m. to 8p.m. (classroom). The dates for this second session are April 21st through May 10th. The cost of the class is $130.00, which includes books. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY FOR ALL COURSE DATES.

Individuals interested in working for the New Britain Parks and Recreation Department are encouraged to apply for a lifeguarding position prior to taking the course. The application deadline for summer employment is Wednesday, March 18th. Pools are open in the summer seven days a week for eight weeks from June 20th, to August 15th. Pool hours during the summer are 9:00 am ­ 12:00 pm for swim lessons and 1:00 pm ­ 8:00 pm for public swim. Hourly rates range from $8.00 - $17.00 per hour depending on position.

The New Britain Parks and Recreation Department will be accepting applications for summer employment and lifeguard training registrations Monday through Friday, 8:15-3:45 in room 302 of City Hall.
