It is the responsibility of the Tax Office to collect all City taxes. All tax bills are prepared by the Tax Office. Unpaid Real Estate and Personal Property taxes must be liened and recorded, and shall be released after payment has been received.

Lists of delinquent Motor Vehicle taxes must be run off and forwarded to the Department of Motor Vehicles after each collection period. Correspondence must be answered on a daily basis. Jeopardy taxes on businesses being closed must be issued and followed through to effect possible collection. Notices from the Bankruptcy Court must be checked for outstanding taxes. Monthly reports for the Common Council meetings must be prepared. Properly approved tax refunds are processed by the Tax Collector.

On an annual basis prior to July, bank requests for escrow account bills on real estate must be forwarded to the banks for payment. Daily deposits of funds collected are made by the Tax Collector.

Checks returned by the bank for any reason must be followed up to effect collection plus the penalty charges incurred.

Fee Schedule (eff. March 1,1991)
Interest 1-1/2% per month or $2.00 minimum charge, per bill from the due date on unpaid principal balance per state statutes
Lien Fee $24.00 charge as authorized by state statutes
Check Charge $20.00 charge for any check returned by the bank for any reason
Statement Charge Lists status of an account. Basic charge is $1.00. Additional charge depending upon request of information
Release No service charge. Tax clearance on delinquent accounts for purpose obtaining a motor vehicle registration. Requires tax payment in full. No personal or business checks accepted.
Real Estate Information No service charge. Handwritten statement on status of tax account.
