Birth Certificate Information
A birth certificate is on file in the Town Clerk's Office in the town where the birth occurred and in the mother's town of residence at the time of birth.
A full size certified copy is $10.00
A wallet size certificate of birth is $5.00.
(No personal checks accepted by mail)
Requests may be made in writing or in person during our regular office hours.
To request a birth certificate by mail:
Send a letter including the following information or print and complete the Request for Birth Certificate Form
- Full birth name and date on the certificate being requested.
- Mother's full maiden name and birthplace.
- Father's full name and birthplace.
- Indicate your choice of long form or wallet size birth certificate
- Specify name, address, written signature and relationship of person requesting the birth certificate
Important: Anyone requesting a copy of a birth record less than 100 years old as allowed by law either in person or by mail shall provide documentation proving that such person is entitled to the record.

The person who is requesting the birth certificate must send a photocopy of their driver's license or other state I.D.
If you do not have a driver's license or other state I.D. we may accept photocopies of any (2) of the following:
- Social security card
- Auto registration
- Checking account deposit slip stating name and address
- Written verification of ID from employer on their letterhead stationery
- Copy of utility bill showing name and address
- Voter registration card
- Pay stub
Send your letter, including a copy of your identification and a money order payable to: New Britain Town Clerk
All requests are processed and sent out within 3 business days of receiving your letter.
If you are using an overnight delivery carrier and would like us to return the birth certificate overnight, please enclose a pre-paid overnight envelope with your request.
